ChopinThe Man and His Music James Huneker 9781117628769 Books
This is a fairly extensive book about Chopin's life and music. It is 3042 locations long to give you an idea of its size. There are some formatting issues, for example the table of contents is all jumbled up. It runs together all on one line rather then formatted in a way you expect a table of content to look, and none of the chapters (there are 14 of them) are linked to their locations in the book, which would have been helpful in the book of this length. The books covers both his biography and analysis of some of his musical pieces. In many places where he talks about music he includes "[Musical score excerpt]" phrase, not sure if they are place holders or issues in Kindle printing, but the musical score excerpts are not present.
I found the biography and other information interesting, but because of the technical issues the book feels unfinished and sloppy.

ChopinThe Man and His Music James Huneker 9781117628769 Books Reviews
This book was obviously copied (and poorly at that) and then somehow put in a hardback cover.
Very thorough.
Difficult read. Too many words beyond my vocabulary. As if the author is showing off which kind of pisses me off.
However, I suffered through it as Chopin is my favorite. I found the information in the book fascinating but hate the author.
Somewhat over the top; however, it was published 64 years ago. Good information for the know nothings. Like me. Try it.
I had hoped to find a biography of Chopin that would be a detailed life story. This edition requires a technical understanding of music,
composing, etc. It would be meaningful to such a person, but to me it was a struggle to get through it.
This would have been much more interesting if I were a music major or a pianist. I had to give up 35% of the way through it when it started getting too technical to be understandable or interesting to me.
The biography is very disappointing, the musical descriptions are poetic but don't get into much detail. If you want a general feel for Chopin's music but don't want intricate musical detail, the descriptions of the pieces may suit your need. That's the only reason I didn't give this book the lowest possible rating.
For biographical info, "Chopin in Paris" by Tad Szulc is much more informative and accurate. Huneker's biography, besides being relatively short, takes off on gossipy tangents that often jump around in time making it hard to get a good feeling for Chopin's progression thru life.
My problem with the musical descriptions (the book is divided into 76 pages of biography and 141 pages of music "analysis", divided into sections on preludes, mazurkas, etc.) is again the gossipy nature. For example, the chapter on the preludes is 13 pages long. The first four pages are strictly about who claimed when and where they were written.
I recently played Prelude No. 4 in E Minor at Peabody in Baltimore. Prior to the recital, I was deluged with coaching at college master-class play-ins, etc. The discussions centered on things like why the downbeat beginning each measure is played weaker than usual, contributing to the feeling of hopelessness in the piece.
Huneker's descriptions are "The melody seems literally to wail..", "This tiny prelude contains wonderful music", "The whole is like some canvas by Rembrant.."
In the relatively few times Huneker does go into musical detail there may be some insight, but just as frequently a few bars of music are shown accompanied by an explanation like, "Volcanic mutterings these!" -when the music shown is a pianissimo (played very softly) passage!
For anyone looking for insights on actually playing the pieces, Walker's "The Chopin Companion.." which can be found "used" at , is a much better choice.
